I should really be making Christmas presents at the moment but as I'd ended up with lots of bits left over from said Christmas pressie, I thought I'd have a go at making some quilted coasters.
This one almost matches the dala horse I found recently.
We're a bit short on 'nice' coasters at the moment - although we've quite a lot of the very faded raffia and rather worn melamine types. I did have a lovely pair of ceramic coasters that I bought years ago at a Charles Rennie Mackintosh exhibition in Glasgow, sadly one of those was broken during an uncharacteristic cleaning blitz and the other is now kept out of harms way on a bedside table.
Slightly Cath K-ish rose print - but using genuinely vintage fabric.
Cue an internet search for a quilted coaster tutorial (I used the basics from this one - omitting the patchwork element, obviously.)
His and hers style front and back.
Several scraps of vintage fabric - both found at a summer jumble sale in Basildon - and some padding cut from a length of thick curtain interfacing, found as a job lot with some fabric bought at a boot sale some months ago.
Blue side for the chess player of the house.
A few minutes on the sewing machine and I ended up with three new coasters for practically nowt.
Rose-print for the vintage fan.
What a brilliant idea! I've got so many scarps of vintage fabric that need utilising, looks like the next wet Saturday's taken care of. x
PS Thanks for your fab comment yesterday. Like you, I've never felt alienated by the high street. Who wants to be herded into a shop specific to the over 40s?

These look great - I might even give them a go. Love the match with your dala horse!

Great use and great job! I've been holding on to this tutorial link, http://sneezerville.wordpress.com/2011/01/06/tutorial-mug-rug/ , for a long time...someday I'll get around to it. I think this is a great project to use the fabric scavenged from the legs of old blue jeans too.
