The mobile hairdresser who lived round the corner from us, and who has been cutting our hair most satisfactorily for the past three-and-a-half years, has recently retired. She used to pop round on a six weekly basis and trim mine and P's hair for the grand sum of £10 for the both of us.
Cue my hair having grown like a weed these past six weeks and I was on the lookout for another mobile hairdresser in the vicinity. A quick Google search revealed there was someone only a couple of streets away, and a very nice young girl she is too. She came round yesterday lunchtime and gave my hair a wet cut, trimmed exactly what I'd asked her to trim and I'm very happy with the results. Only problem is - she charges £15 just for a wet cut!! Apparently a cut and blow-dry would be between £25 - £30. Gulp! Just as well I'm more than happy to blow-dry my own hair after it's been cut. The last time I had my hair cut in a salon it cost me £25 for a wash, cut and blow-dry. As that was coming up four years ago, I suspect the price would have risen dramatically in the meantime. Plus I totally hate sitting in the hairdressers having to stare at myself in the mirror for ages whilst my hair is being cut, and then have to sit there even longer whilst it gets blow-dried to within an inch of it's life and I come out feeling a right twit with seriously over-styled hair on a seriously under-styled body.
A Thrifty Mrs had an excellent blog post recently on cutting your own fringe. This is something I've been doing for years and years - with mixed results, it has to be admitted. Last week I had a go at my fringe again as it had got to the tres irritating length of being right in my eyes. Unfortunately, I couldn't find my 30-year-old hairdressing scissors anywhere so I had to make do with using rather large dressmaking scissors. I was quite pleased with the end result but thought it only fair that I mention my DIY attempts to the hairdresser yesterday. I was a tad taken aback when she said she'd realised I must've cut it myself and she'd do her best to even it all up!! Really!!! I had no idea I'd made that much of a hash of it - unlike the time I decided to cut my fringe after having partaken of a glass or two of pear schnapps. Now, that really was a botched job.
Yeh, I think I pay a similar amount for mine to our (mobile) hairdresser. I only get it cut x2 a year though so it's fine by me. Eeek, the pear schnapps incident. That'll teach you! xx

Last time my hair was cut by a professional must have been 4-5 years ago !!
Oh, it is hard parting with those pennies simply to get your hair cut off...
Mnnn... Pear Schnapps !!

I've always hated the hairdresser's too. I found a tutorial on-line and cut my own, too. I have a hairdresser friend and she actually admired my cut and asked who did it! x

I always trim my fringe and did it last night over the bathroom sink. I have a wedding to go to tomorrow and I bet nobody notices or cares, ok I do have to take my glasses off when I do this but it looks fine, but then again I'm not wearing my glasses when I look at myself.

It costs me $65NZ for a wash and cut and that's considered cheap.
My partner hasn't been to the barber for years though as I cut his hair and beard and trim all those other weird places on the head that men grow hair ( and pretty well, I must say) and all for the price of a cup of tea.
A good deal for him and savings of ( get calculator out)approximately $4,800 over the last 20 years :)

I cut my own and colour it myself too. Get lots of compliments on my style so I guess practise makes perfect.
I'm not giving a hairdresser £50+ to do my hair- I hate sitting there staring in the mirror too.
Have a look on Youtube there is some good advice on there regarding haircutting.

£15 for a wet cut in your own home sounds very pricy to me. I recently had a wash, cut and blow dry in a local salon for £26, which I thought was OK value.
