Mum has got a very ancient knitting book that she bought in a charity shop in Poole years ago when we were on holiday in near-by Studland. I remembered the book well as Mum and I made a complete show of ourselves laughing at some of the patterns in the book in the middle of the shopping centre in Poole. I'd forgotten all about it until Mum got the book out over Christmas whilst on the hunt for a bedsock pattern for DN.
There is the extremely condescending description of a 'slenderizing' cardigan for the outsize figure.
Being on the big side myself I find this description very rude to larger ladies!!
The 'I'm having a fag' jumper.
And, last but not least, the how to frighten the neighbours 'fascinator'.
Your neighbours clearly don't appreciate an "intelligent party-goer" when they see one!

I love looking through old patterns - it makes me wonder quite what people would say to you if you ended up wearing these creations in public. Even what would have been said when they were fashionable?
