It's become a little bit of a tradition for P and I to take ourselves off to Southend-on-Sea every Easter Saturday. P goes to check out the chess at the Southend Chess Congress and I go to check out the charity shops and generally have a bit of a wander. We meet up during the afternoon and have a spot of lunch. This year we went back to a rather spiffy French restaurant in one of the quiet little side streets that branch off the main shopping area.
The food was delicious. I had the fanciest, tastiest sausage and mash ever - with some very nice onion rings balanced on the top.
And P chose steak and rice in a curry sauce. He pronounced it delicious.
For pudding we went for the rather upmarket-sounding 'assiette of desserts' to share - P, who speaks French, informs me it only means 'a plate of desserts!' (Why does everything sound so much posher when written in French?) They were absolutely gorgeous.
It was all very nice and civilised in the restaurant, with a beautifully painted ceiling
A pianist playing a grand piano
And pretty little vignettes of antique items to look at (including a large cello in a copper bath (!) but I didn't have the nerve to photograph that.
The weather was lovely - not overly warm but not raining either - so we went to have a look at the sea.
I managed to find a few rather nice bits and bobs in the charity shops and also to spend an obscene amount of money on two reels of sewing thread - but more on that tomorrow.
Oh just drool for that plate of deserts!!

Why do they use a big plate, then pile the food up in the centre so it looks like you are getting a piddling little bit? I would think I was being diddled.

Sounds like a lovely day - each doing your own thing then meeting up for a delicious-looking meal. The assiette of puds looks the best!
